10 שנים לפני (לפני שעלילת הסדרה התחילה), טריטוריה
מסתורית, אשר ידועה כ"שער הגהינום", הופיעה בטוקיו.
במקביל, שינתה את פניי השמיים והעלימה את הנוף. הכוכבים האמיתיים בשמיים נעלמו ובמקומם הופיעו כוכבים פיקטיביים אשר משויכים לאותם קונטרקטורים (Contractors) אשר צצו עם יכולות מיוחדות אשר גובות מחיר מסוים. יחד איתם הופיעו ה'בובות' (Dolls), חסרות האישיות אשר ביכולתן לשלוח רוח משקיפה. האומות השונות בעולם שומרות בסוד מהציבור על קיומם של הקונטרקטורים, ומשתמשות בקונטרקטורים כמרגלים וכסוכנים. הקונטרקטורים חסרי רחמים, ולרוב יעבדו עבור אחת ממגוון קבוצות/תאגידים יריבות בתור מרגלים או רוצחים. בכל אופן, בתחילה לא ניתן לדעת מה המטרה הסופית של קבוצות אלה. הי, הגיבור הראשי, אשר חפץ לדעת מה עלה בגורל אחותו, עובד יחד עם יין, הבובה העיוורת, מאו החתול הפיקח והואנג קצר הרוח. יחד הם מבצעים את משימות התאגיד ואט אט חושפים את האמת הנוראית.
